ECRH Engineer

About Stellarex Energy

At Stellarex Energy, we are building foundational technology for the clean energy transition by harnessing stellarator fusion to provide safe, reliable, and carbon-free baseload power. Turning this ambitious physics and engineering goal into industrial reality requires an exceptional, mission-driven team. If you are ready to solve one of humanity’s greatest technological challenges and build transformative hardware from the ground up, we invite you to join our team in the Greater Toronto Area.

Role Overview

Stellarex Energy is seeking an outstanding, experienced ECRH Engineer to drive the engineering design, hardware procurement, and operational delivery of our Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ECRH) system for our prototype stellarator facility in the Greater Toronto Area. Reporting to the technical leadership of the project, you will serve as a specialist responsible for high-power microwave systems, high-frequency gyrotrons, evacuated transmission waveguides, steerable launchers, and real-time power control. In this role, you will bridge plasma physics calculations directly into high-precision microwave hardware to enable plasma startup, breakdown, localized electron heating, and non-inductive current drive.

Core Responsibilities
  • ECRH System Engineering & Design: Contribute to the comprehensive engineering design and multi-physics integration of high-power ECRH systems, including high power gyrotron sources, high-voltage power supplies, evacuated transmission lines, vacuum windows, and steerable launcher mechanisms.
  • Microwave Transmission & Optics: Execute the design and optimization of low-loss transmission lines, quasi-optical mirror systems, polarizers, directional couplers, and ceramic vacuum barrier windows for reliable microwave power injection into 3D magnetic geometries.
  • In-Vessel Launcher & Steering Mechanisms: Direct mechanical, thermal, and electrical design for steerable in-vessel launching mirrors, active cooling circuits, and fast actuator feedback loops capable of precise beam deposition and localized heating/current drive.
  • Physics & Systems Co-Design Interface: Partner closely with plasma physicists and 3D CAD integration engineers to align ECRH power absorption profiles, harmonic resonance frequencies (ECRH/ECCD), port space envelopes, and stray microwave radiation protection.
  • Vendor Procurement & Facility Testing: Interface with specialized high-power microwave vendors, executing Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), high-voltage commissioning, RF conditioning, and site integration ahead of initial plasma operations.
Required Qualifications & Experience
  • Education: Master’s Degree or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Microwave Engineering, Applied Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience: 5+ years of hands-on engineering experience designing, assembling, and operating high-power microwave, gyrotron, millimeter-wave, or ECRH heating systems in fusion, accelerator, or industrial high-power RF facilities.
  • Technical Mastery: Deep expertise in high-power microwave transmission, quasi-optics, gyrotron operation, high-voltage power electronics, vacuum windows, and microwave diagnostic instrumentation.
  • CAD & Engineering Integration: Proven track record using 3D CAD platforms, high-frequency electromagnetic modeling tools, and thermal/mechanical analysis tools for high-heat-flux components.
  • Project & Safety Alignment: Demonstrated capability working with vendor supply chains, microwave safety protocols, interlock systems, and multi-disciplinary project teams in regulated high-tech hardware environments.
Compensation & Benefits

Stellarex offers an industry-leading competitive base salary paired with meaningful company equity options, providing direct ownership in our long-term enterprise growth. We also offer comprehensive health and dental coverage, professional development support, and relocation assistance to the Greater Toronto Area.
