Superconductor Engineer

About Stellarex Energy

At Stellarex Energy, we are building foundational technology for the clean energy transition by harnessing stellarator fusion to provide safe, reliable, and carbon-free baseload power. Turning this ambitious physics and engineering goal into industrial reality requires an exceptional, mission-driven team. If you are ready to solve one of humanity’s greatest technological challenges and build transformative hardware from the ground up, we invite you to join our team in the Greater Toronto Area.

Role Overview

Stellarex Energy is seeking an experienced, technically rigorous Superconductor Engineer to contribute to the engineering development, material specification, testing, and system integration of High-Temperature Superconductor (HTS) and Low-Temperature Superconductor architectures for our prototype stellarator facilities and commercial spin-off applications. Reporting to the technical leadership of Stellarex, you will serve as a subject matter expert advancing state-of-the-art superconducting cable topologies, low-resistance jointing technologies, critical current (Ic) characterization under extreme magnetic fields and mechanical strain, quench detection/propagation, and advanced insulation or co-winding protocols. Beyond fusion magnet applications, you will contribute to technology translation and engineering qualification of advanced HTS/LTS superconductor designs for high-impact spin-off applications across aerospace, transportation, defense, mining, medical imaging, and electrical power distribution.

Core Responsibilities
  • HTS & LTS Conductor Engineering & Qualification: Contribute to the comprehensive engineering development, conductor specification, and electro-thermal qualification of HTS and LTS configurations optimized for high magnetic fields (>10 T to 20+ T), cryogenic operating temperatures (4.2 K to 77 K), and complex 3D non-planar coil geometries.
  • Electromechanical & Thermal Characterization: Conduct experimental critical current (Ic) testing under multi-axis mechanical stress/strain, bending limits, thermal cycling, and high background magnetic fields; validate finite element electromagnetic, mechanical, and thermal modeling baselines.
  • Jointing, Insulation & Quench Protection: Develop and optimize ultra-low-resistance jointing/splicing protocols, advanced dielectric insulation or co-winding topologies, and real-time quench detection and protection strategies to ensure high engineering current density (Je) and robust operational margins.
  • Fusion Magnet System Integration: Collaborate closely with magnet design engineers, cryogenic engineers, and 3D CAD integration specialists to incorporate high-performance HTS/LTS conductors into coil casings, structural cold mass supports, and high-current lead assemblies.
  • Dual-Use & Spin-Off Technology Translation: Lead the engineering adaptation and qualification of Stellarex superconductor technology for commercial spin-off markets.
  • Vendor Procurement & Quality Verification: Interface with global superconductor manufacturers and specialized conductor suppliers, establishing rigorous technical procurement specifications, quality verification testing protocols, and supplier quality audits.
Required Qualifications & Experience
  • Education: Master’s Degree or Ph.D. (preferred) in Materials Science & Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
  • Experience: 5+ years of hands-on engineering experience in superconductor development, characterization, manufacturing, high-field magnet engineering, or advanced cryo-electromagnetic device design.
  • Superconductor Physics & Materials Mastery: Deep technical proficiency in superconductor material science, critical current (Ic) testing, strain sensitivity, flux pinning, AC losses, and quench behavior.
  • Multi-Industry Application Knowledge: Demonstrated understanding of technical requirements and operating environments for superconductors across fusion energy, aerospace, transportation, defense, medical imaging, or electrical power distribution systems.
  • Testing, Modeling & Instrumentation: Proven expertise in cryogenic testing environments (liquid helium/nitrogen), mechanical/thermal characterization under magnetic fields, finite element modeling (FEA/COMSOL/ANSYS), and data acquisition system integration.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Strong communication skills, with a proven ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary physics, engineering, and commercial teams, as well as manage external supplier deliverables and research partnerships.
